Spanish Mackerel: These sleek, silver torpedoes are the speedsters of the inshore world. Known for their blistering runs and acrobatic leaps, Spanish macks will test your drag and your reflexes. They typically show up in Cape May waters from late spring through early fall, with the hottest action usually in July and August. Expect fish in the 2-4 pound range, though bigger ones aren't uncommon. The fight is only half the fun - these guys are also excellent table fare, perfect for the grill or smoker.
Bluefish: The bruisers of the bunch, blues are like the punk rockers of the sea - always ready for a fight. These chompers are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. They can range from 2-pound "snappers" to 15-pound-plus "gators" that'll make your arms ache. Blues are around most of the year but really fire up in the warmer months. They're not picky eaters, which means consistent action when you find a school. Just watch those teeth when you're unhooking them!
Striped Bass: The rockstars of the East Coast, stripers (or "rockfish" if you're feeling fancy) are the prized catch for many anglers. These powerful, line-sided fish can grow to impressive sizes, with 20 to 40-pounders not uncommon. While we primarily target them in the spring and fall, summer can produce some great fishing too, especially early in the morning or on overcast days. Landing a big striper is a true achievement - they fight hard and taste even better.
King Mackerel: The big cousins of the Spanish mackerel, kings are the heavy hitters of the mackerel family. These long, sleek predators can top 50 pounds, though most we catch are in the 10 to 30-pound range. Kings are summer visitors to our waters, usually showing up when the water warms in June and sticking around into September. Hooking into a king is like setting off a firecracker - they'll rip line off your reel faster than you can say "fish on!" Their smoking hot runs and tendency to skyrocket out of the water make them a favorite among sport fishermen.
Atlantic Bonito: Don't let their small size fool you - these little powerhouses pack a serious punch. Bonito are like mini tunas, streamlined and built for speed. They typically range from 2 to 8 pounds but fight like fish twice their size. We usually start seeing them in late spring, with the action peaking in the summer months. Bonito are known for their blistering first run and dogged fights. They're also considered a delicacy by many anglers, with flesh similar to tuna. Whether you're keeping them for the table or practicing catch-and-release, bonito are a blast to catch.
Look, if you're after a day of non-stop fishing action in one of the East Coast's prime inshore spots, this is your ticket. Captain Clint and his crew at Common Sense Sportfishing have dialed in these waters, and they're ready to put you on the fish. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler with some tasty fillets or just want to experience the thrill of battling these hard-fighting species, they've got you covered. Took an inshore trip with my twin sister, and the black sea bass were biting non-stop—doubles more often than singles! Kyle was on point the entire time, making sure we were set up and taken care of. The captain knew exactly where to go and kept us on the bite by moving when needed. We had an incredible experience and would absolutely book with Common Sense again. This crew made it one of the most memorable trips we’ve ever had. Truly top-notch!

Atlantic bonito are like mini tunas that pack a punch. They usually run 2-5 pounds but can reach 10-12 pounds. We find them offshore in the warmer months, often in large schools chasing bait fish near the surface. They're fast swimmers - up to 40 mph! - and put up a great fight on light tackle. Trolling small spoons or casting metal jigs into feeding frenzies works well. Bonito make excellent bait for bigger game fish, but they're also tasty when prepared fresh. One local trick: look for bird activity on the water - that often means bonito are feeding below. Motor upwind, shut off the engine, and cast into the frenzy for non-stop action!

Bluefish are aggressive fighters that'll give you a run for your money. They average 3-5 pounds but can get up to 20 pounds or more. We usually find them from spring through fall in the surf, inlets, and nearshore waters. They're voracious predators, often seen in feeding frenzies chasing bait fish. Anglers love bluefish for their hard strikes and powerful runs. Use metal lures, poppers, or live bait like bunker or mullet. A wire leader is a must - their sharp teeth will slice through mono. Bluefish are fun to catch, but be careful handling them. Their meat is oily but tasty when fresh. Pro tip: try chunking with fresh-cut bait to bring in the bigger ones when they're around.

King mackerel are speed demons that'll make your reel scream. They average 10-20 pounds but can top 50 pounds. We typically find them offshore in the warmer months, often around reefs and wrecks. Kings are known for their blistering runs and acrobatic leaps. Trolling with live bait like blue runners or cigar minnows is deadly. Wire leaders are a must to prevent bite-offs. The fight is thrilling, and the meat makes great steaks or smoked fish dip. Here's a local tip: when you see birds diving and bait fish skipping across the surface, that's often kings feeding below. Motor upwind of the action, deploy your baits, and hold on tight!

Spanish mackerel are sleek, fast swimmers that put up a great fight. They typically run 1-2 feet long and a few pounds, but can get up to 3 feet and 25 pounds. Look for them in the warmer months, usually May through October, when they migrate to our waters. They like to hang out near the surface in coastal areas, around inlets and sandbars. Trolling with small spoons or jigs is a reliable way to catch them. These fish are known for their sudden, acrobatic jumps and long runs. The meat is tasty too, great for grilling or smoking. One local tip: keep an eye out for diving birds - that often means Spanish mackerel are feeding on bait fish below. Cast into the frenzy and hang on!

Striped bass, or "stripers," are a prized catch around here. They can range from schoolies under 28 inches to trophy fish over 40 inches and 30+ pounds. We find them in the surf, inlets, and around structure like jetties and bridges. Spring and fall are prime seasons when they migrate through. Stripers put up an amazing fight, with powerful runs and head shakes. Live bait like bunker or eels work great, as do artificial lures like swimming plugs and bucktails. The meat is delicious - mild and flaky. One local trick: fish the outgoing tide at night with a dark-colored lure for big bass feeding under the cover of darkness. Just be ready for that rod to double over when they hit!
